I managed to get my hands on the Smeg Espresso Coffee Machine, so here’s my personal review of this small but powerful machine.
Overall Rating
Espresso Making
Considering this is not a cheap machine, you want to make sure it produces high-quality espresso.
Thankfully, it does just that. During my thorough testing (which helps feed my coffee addiction), I found that the consistency of the machine was fantastic.
The shots of espresso weren’t watered-down, and the crema was perfect.
However, if you’re not a big fan of drinking espresso shots on their own, you’ll be happy to know that it makes yummy cappuccinos and lattes too! The steam wand was easy to use and quite powerful.
Also, it’s worth mentioning that you can change the water temperature.
I personally love super hot espresso machines, but some of my friends don’t. Therefore, this feature was great for everyone.
Speed
As one of my friends likes to say, “time is money, friend!”
So, with that in mind, I always like to review how fast the machine is, from the second I press the on button to when I’m sipping on my caffeine-infused drink.
The Smeg took roughly 3 minutes to complete this process. Other machines I’ve tried have taken me about 15-20 minutes, so I cannot talk badly about their speed.
Cleaning
In my opinion, this is an amazing-looking machine. So, it makes sense you want to keep it looking its best.
Cleaning the machine was very straightforward.
After about a month of usage, I used my espresso cleaning solution. Afterward, the machine continued working as if I had just taken it out of the box.
Colors Available
I’ve tried and tested a lot of espresso makers over the years, and I can tell you that it’s rare to have a variety of colors to choose from.
With the Smeg Espresso espresso maker, you can choose between 6 colors:
– Black
– Pink
– Pastel Blue
– Pastel Green
– Cream
– Red
Obviously, there’s more to buying a coffee machine than just looking at colors, but I think the different options make the machine suitable for a wide array of kitchen styles.
Energy Usage
When it comes to the amount of energy the machine uses, the result is, well, just about average. Considering that this maker is quite small, I thought that its energy consumption would be lower.
So, if you’re environmentally conscious, then you may want to explore other options.
However, if you’re more concerned about how it will impact your energy bills, then the answer is not a huge amount; I didn’t really notice any change.
One of the Smeg’s espresso machine features that helps keep energy usage down is its automatic turn-off. The machine will turn off after approximately 9 minutes. Although, you do have the choice to extend this if you want.

Overall, I thought the Smeg espresso maker is a great machine. It is definitely a little pricy, but if you can afford it and like the look of the machine, I think it’s worth it.
Just keep in mind that it doesn’t come with a grinder. If you have pre-ground beans or a grinder already, there are no worries at all! If not, feel free to check out The Calphalon – it may be a better choice!
