More often than not a mug is the prime choice for drinking coffee. Although, this is just one of the many options available for holding hot liquid. Other choices may be more desirable, especially if there are not enough coffee mugs to go around. So, this presents the question: can you put coffee in solo cups?

The simple answer

So, can you put coffee in solo cups?

Technically you can, but it’s worth using something else. The problem with using a plastic solo cup is that hot coffee can cause the solo cup to release chemicals that mix with it.

Obviously, these chemicals are bad for us humans, so using a standard plastic solo cup should be avoided.

Other types of solo cups that can be used

Solo papers cups have been specifically designed for those wanting a hot drink. Whether it’s a coffee, some sort of tea, or other hot drink, these cups are the way to go.

So, if you’re at the store and come across some of these bad boys, it’s worth getting a few. Plus, they’re made mainly from bio-degradable material, which means the cups are very eco-friendly.

Alternative options

There are plenty of other options available to use. For example, if you’re on the go, grab a travel mug. Or if you’re at home and want to be more environmentally friendly, try a mason jar. And finally, if you’re looking for something quick and easy, grab a paper coffee cup.

What you definitely shouldn’t do with standard solo cups

To make sure you’re using solo cups safely without the chance of them impacting your health, here are the extra points you should be aware of.

Do not microwave – Never, ever, ever do this! Even after a couple of seconds in the microwave, the cup turns into a bendable and squidgy mess. Not to mention all the plastic that would leak into the liquid when doing this.

Do not put other hot beverages in them – It isn’t worth the health risks associated with putting hot liquids in plastic solo cups. And this goes for all hot drinks, not just coffee.

Do not put it in the oven – Although it sounds like a no-brainer, it’s worth a mention. Similar to putting them in the microwave, don’t do it.
